Brae Lochaber Roman Catholic Baptismal and Marriage Records 1817-1925

Transcribed records from St Margaret’s Roy Bridge. We are indebted to the late Anne MacDonell and to Robert MacFarlane for their painstaking work in preserving these records. Religious record keeping did not seem to be a great priority in this period and many of the records are incomplete with pages missing, some illegible, and many marriages and baptisms unaccounted for. Some early Catholic records are to be found in the Kilmonivaig Church of Scotland records prior to 1855 . Legal restrictions on Catholics obliged them to have their banns of marriage and records held by the Church of Scotland. They were forced to pay the minister for the privilege and only a small number of the largely impoverished community complied.
